What is FSC?

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is a non-governmental and not-for-profit organization founded in 1993 that includes among its members environmental and social groups, indigenous communities, forest owners, companies that work and sell wood and paper, as well as scientists and technicians who work together to promote the management of forests and plants in a way that protects the natural environment all over the world. The initiative helps people (workers and the local population), it makes sense from an economic standpoint, and it is in line with the principles of sustainable growth.

What does FSC do?

With the consesus and the equal participation of all the interested parties (the stakeholders), FSC has defined the Principles and Criteria of reference in the proper management of forests that are based on rigorous social and environmental parameters valid all over the world. It has also developed a special system of certification in the management of forests, and systems that track the wood (Chain-of-Custody, COC) and label products. Forests are controlled and evaluated in an independent manner by certified enties accredited by FSC who in turn controls how these entities operate so as to assure their competence and their credibility. At the same time, accredited and certified entities control and evaluate the work phases and the commercialization of the products derived from the forests to assure that these products can be traced from the forest of origin all the way to the point of sale. These controls along with a special labeling system allow companies and their consumers to identify wood and products made from wood derived from forests that are managed in a correct and responsible way according to FSC standards.
